The Book-Maker is Accused of Fixing a Road Bowling Score

From “The Fog People”

The gambler Dallan accuses the book-maker Iollan of fixing the road bowling score that the Irish champion, Art, lost to a German.

IOLLAN
Art lost. There are winners and losers. This time, I’m the winner. Simple as that.

DALLAN
And Ireland, again, is the loser.

IOLLAN
You’ve been gone too long. Art’s lost his touch.

DALLAN
Man doesn’t lose what’s stamped on his soul.

IOLLAN
You never saw the German lad shoot.

DALLAN
I don’t need to.

IOLLAN
If you had, with your own two eyes, you’d have seen that he knows how to work a road. I didn’t tell you to put your money on Art. I don’t make choices for people.

DALLAN
You knew we wouldn’t bet against our own man.

IOLLAN
About the match, I was right. And you were wrong again. If Art had won, I wouldn’t be crying to you or anyone else who stood behind Art.

DALLAN
Maybe to you it’s black-and-white, to someone who doesn’t understand what it means to be Irish –

IOLLAN
I’ve lived here all my life. Just because my mother wasn’t Irish doesn’t mean I’m not Irish.

DALLAN
Oh yes it does. You’re not one of us. You don’t belong here! Some mother. Had she been a real Irish woman, she’d have drowned you. Or at least taught you some values, decency, honor, respect. She taught you betrayals, manipulation, her colonizing ways. You see something you want, you just take it: a man’s honor, a country’s soul, a man’s wife.
